Seven-time Grammy winner Mark Fain’s musical roots run deep into the heart of east Tennessee where he started playing guitar before he was old enough to start school. By the time he was a teenager, he had steady gigs playing guitar and bass not only with his uncles’ band, but with several gospel groups that traveled the Tennessee-Virginia-North Carolina circuit, so hitting the road seemed only natural, and that’s exactly what he did the day after his high school graduation.
Although he moved to Nashville in 1989 with aspirations of becoming a professional guitar player, his skills as a bassist proved more in demand. His mastery of both electric and upright bass ultimately helped earn him a spot in Ricky Skaggs’ acclaimed band Kentucky Thunder in 1995. He toured with Skaggs for nearly 17 years, during which time the band was named Instrumental Group of the Year a record eight times by the International Bluegrass Music Association.
While much of his time has been spent on stage performing, Fain is equally at home in a recording studio. In a career now spanning three decades, the accomplished bassist and producer has appeared and recorded with artists including Jack Black, Rosanne Cash, Ry Cooder, John Fogerty, Chris Hillman, Bruce Hornsby, Alan Jackson, Martina McBride, John Oates, Joan Osborne, Dolly Parton, Tom Petty, Ricky Skaggs and a long list of others. He’s also written his share of original music, penning and recording a musical score for the independent film LA308, shot in Louisiana and released in 2009.
Fain counts among his greatest accomplishments the chance to work with his idol, legendary jazz bassist Charlie Haden. He co-produced the Grammy-nominated and critically acclaimed Rambling Boy: Charlie Haden Family & Friends in 2008. After meeting Haden at the Grammys a number of years ago, Fain echoed an idea that had been rumbling in Haden’s head for 20 years—to record a roots album honoring the Haden family’s Ozarks heritage. The jazz icon grew up playing and singing with the family band in the 1930s and 40s, and Rambling Boy captures the sounds of the next generation. Wife Ruth Cameron, son Josh and triplet daughters Petra, Rachel and Tanya are joined by a host of other musical greats in the moving tribute to the early days of Haden’s storied career.
Road weary and eager to focus more on recording and producing, Fain left Skaggs’ band in 2011. Since then he’s continued to rack up recording credits and has recently teamed up with former Desert Rose Band alums John Jorgenson and Herb Pedersen and singer/songwriter Jon Randall to form the John Jorgenson Bluegrass band.
Steve Chandler, is a 2 Time Grammy winner and has had numerous Grammy nominations throughtout his career. As one of the top engineers in Music City, Nashvillee still today, Steve has had many other award throughout his career in all the music genres'. Steve has had many awards and nomintions in the Bluegrass and Country Songs and Albums of the year awards etc. Steve is greatly desired and in high demand by many artist, Steve says, "that he feels previliaged that he has been able to work and engineered with so many great artist over the years" such as Merl Haggared, Vince Gill, Dolly Paton, Alison Krauss, Trace Atkins, Keith Urban , George Jones, Crystal Gayle and many others,. Steve has engineered live concerts as well as in the studio for many of the Groups plus some of Americas favorites, Beach Boys, George Thorogood, 38 special , The Black Crows, Kansas, and so many others it would be easier to say who he as not worked with. Steve Chandler is a wonderful talented engineer and we are so blessed to have him on our Team here at Nashville 37201, The Nashville Corner and the Nashville Beat.
